For 2020, one of my goals is to get back out more in my local community, both on a professional and personal level. Although online networking - Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, etc. - can be good if there is a purpose behind it, it is too easy to fall into the habit of checking in online, swiping up, down, left, right, or whatever, and spend countless hours doing so without any real benefits from the time invested.
Getting out and meeting up with people face to face still has its benefits. These interactions are key to forming true bonds and realizing visions. I have met people who had little or no presence on social media but have brought value to me or my business. Plus, there is a certain level of trust and connection that can be developed in person that can’t be attained on the social networks.
Face-to-face events can be niche Meetups (meetup.com), workshops, professional happy hours, retreats, volunteering, or one-one coffee or lunch. There is also LinkedIn Events where members can create live events and find offline communities. Walking meetings are quite good for both mental and physical health; they inject some fresh air, a break from the grind, and exercise into the day.
So, build your offline social network as you do your online network. Step out and step up in 2020!
